Tara Donovan

A few months ago, I took a road trip with my father from Jersey up to Boston to see an exhibition of Tara Donovan's work at the Institute for Contemporary Art. It was an absolutely stunning body of work, that took up the entire top floor of the museum. For those who aren't familiar with her work, she generally creates nature-like forms, textures, and landscapes using unusual, often tedious, materials. Similar to Liza Lou in her construction of rooms out of beads, Donovan constructs hive-like and coral-like forms out of Styrofoam cups and buttons, respectively. She also had three balance pieces in the show, which consisted of various materials, including toothpicks, straight pins, and shattered safety glass, holding themselves in a cube shape, with no glue or adhesive.
